The European Film Academy and the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival congratulate I THINK OF SILENCES WHEN I THINK OF YOU

I THINK OF SILENCES WHEN I THINK OF YOU,

    Sweden 2022, documentary, 9 minutes
    DIRECTED BY Jonelle Twum

A wedding in Ghana, a trip across the sea, and a new home in Europe. Using both archival material and new images, Jonelle Twum takes us on a poetic journey where the silence tells of a woman’s life and dreams.

StatementIn nominating I THINK OF SILENCES WHEN I THINK OF YOU for the European Film Awards, the jury recognise the importance of Jonelle Twum’s practice in exploring personal histories and archives with the moving image, and its possibility to act as both a tool of self-expression, while also making tangible histories that are little recognised in experiences of Ghanaian migration in Sweden and Europe. The film’s feminist perspective gives a voice to the work’s focus while exploring the meaning of silence in an evocative way.

The film is now a candidate for a nomination in the category ‘European Short Film’ at the European Film Awards 2023.

This is the 14th short film candidate for 2023. You can check out the rest of the candidates here for the 36th edition of the European Film Awards.

The short film programme is organised by the European Film Academy in co-operation with a series of film festivals throughout Europe. At each of these festivals, an independent jury presents one of the European short films in competition with a candidacy in the short film category of the European Film Awards.

After the annual cycle is completed, the participating festivals will nominate five short films from this list. Afterwards, the more than 4,300 members of the European Film Academy – film professionals from all over Europe – will vote for the overall winner that will be presented at the 36th European Film Awards Ceremony.
