Mourning José Luis Cienfuegos
José Luis Cienfuegos, the director of the Valladolid International Film Festival, has died unexpectedly at the age of 60.
For three decades, José Luis Cienfuegos (or “Mr. Hundred Fires” as he jokingly called himself) has been dedicating his unique energy, passion, and knowledge to some of the most important film festivals in Spain. Having started in the press department of the Gijón International Film Festival in the 1990s, he later became the festival’s director.
In 2012, he took over the position of director of the Seville European Film Festival which has been a partner of the European Film Academy and place for the announcement of the nominations for the European Film Awards for many years. José Luis Cienfuegos was also instrumental in bringing the 31st European Film Awards to the city of Seville in 2018.
Since 2023, he was director of the Valladolid International Film Festival. Besides his festival work, José Luis Cienfuegos was active in various juries and commissions. He was a juror for the prestigious Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts, member of the Selection Committee for the European Film Awards and for the LUX Audience Award.
José Luis Cienfuegos died on 2 December 2025. We will miss him.
