    Mourning Marjane Satrapi

    French-Iranian Artist and Director Dies Aged 56

    Born in Rasht in Iran, Marjane Satrapi grew up in Teheran, attended school in Austria and returned to Iran to finish school and study Visual Communications.

    Since 1994 she has lived and worked in Paris, holding both the Iranian and French citizenship. Marjane Satrapi became famous world-wide with her graphic novels describing her childhood in Iran and her adolescence in Europe. The film PERSEPOLIS, based on her original graphic novels, written and directed by Marjane Satrapi together with Vincent Paronnaud, was her first feature film. It premiered in Cannes where it won the Jury Prize, and was later nominated for the BAFTAs, the Oscars and the European Film Awards, and won a French César.

    She teamed up with Vincent Paronnaud again for CHICKEN WITH PLUMS which premiered in Venice 2011. This was followed by GANG OF THE JOTAS (2012), THE VOICES (2014), RADIOACTIVE (2019) and DEAR PARIS (2024).

    Marjane Satrapi died on 4 June in Paris. We will miss her.
