Eight New Treasures of European Film Culture

Continuing a new annual tradition, the European Film Academy announces this year’s additions to the “Treasures of European Film Culture”. With these Treasures, the Academy celebrates places of a symbolic nature for European cinema, places of historical value that need to be maintained and protected not just now, but for generations to come. Among the eight new places, there are bigger areas such as Sarajevo’s Baščaršija district, the Scheibler Lofts at Księży Młyn in Łódź (Poland) and the picturesque port of Corricella on the Italian island of Procida. The Academy is also adding specific buildings like the beautiful Palatsi cinema in Tampere (Finland), Koningshaven Bridge in Rotterdam, and the Swiss steamboat “Schiller”, one of the boats crossing Lake Lucerne. Finally, there are also two historic film studios joining the list: Gamla Filmstaden in Sweden and Filmparken at Jar in Norway.

“We are delighted to honour eight more memorable places as Treasures of European Film Culture that people can visit. It’s especially nice that we can add a few countries that were previously missing from the map of Treasures: Bosnia & Herzegovina, the Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland,“ says Pascal Edelmann, Head of European Film Heritage at the European Film Academy. “Again, we’d like to invite everyone to suggest places the European Film Academy might want to consider as Treasures of European Film Culture.”

The Treasures of European Film Culture are part of the European Film Academy’s expanded film heritage activities, which started in 2022. The new European Film Heritage department has since then initiated a network of national film academies, cinematheques and film archives dedicated to the support and promotion of classics from our continent. Part of the heritage activities is also the “In Memoriam“ section of the European Film Awards, which premiered at the 2022 awards ceremony and commemorates European cinema colleagues who passed away.

The European Film Academy is adding to the existing 41 Treasures:

Baščaršija in Sarajevo, BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA
