The 38th European Film Awards will take place this Saturday, 17 January 2026, at the iconic Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in Berlin, where 1.000 international guests are expected to gather for the festive gala celebrating European cinema. 88 nominees are in the running in 22 categories. The award show, now taking place more prominently in the international awards season just after the Golden Globes and during the Oscar nomination voting period, will bring together leading filmmakers, actors and industry professionals for a celebration of artistic excellence, creativity and the shared passion for film. The red carpet (starting at 4pm CET) and the award ceremony (starting at 6pm CET) will be streamed live on www.europeanfilmawards.eu, reaching audiences worldwide through 46 broadcast and livestream partners from 27 countries across Europe.
Irish-Scottish filmmaker Mark Cousins has joined the creative team preparing this year’s award ceremony. The appointment followed the wish of the Academy to create more impact with its annual ceremony, and steer away from generic scripts dominated by award categories and acceptance speeches. Instead the award show will ask “why do we love cinema?” and be an artistic experience in itself. Mark Cousins is joined by German film composer Dascha Dauenhauer, who has signed responsible for the musical concept of the event, and theatre director Robert Lehniger, who acts as stage director and oversees the award ceremony.
Mark Cousins: “I love playing with the form of film events, so I jumped at the chance to be part of the European Film Awards’ evening. We hope to have some surprises. We’ll try to conjure cinematic images, emotions and ideas. I’m honoured to work with Robert, Dascha and the Academy team, in a building I’ve long admired.”
Dascha Dauenhauer: “With the musical concept for this year’s European Film Awards, I deliberately wanted to create something that departed from the expected, while also following a “back to the roots” principle. Just as the entire show is very closely tied to cinema, the music should revolve around the most intimate and purest instrument there is: the voice. In the wonderful singers Heidi Heidelberg, Zola Mennenöh, and Emilia Mårtensson, I found an ensemble that forms the foundation for a diverse compositional concept – comprising experimental, poppier, and emotional pieces. As diverse and pure as European cinema itself.”
Presenting the award categories throughout the evening will be a diverse group of artists and filmmakers from across Europe, including Spanish actors, writers & directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, Turkish screenwriter, photographer and production designer Ebru Ceylan, Spanish actor Carlos Cuevas, Oscar-winning British director Asif Kapadia, German-Romanian director Alexander Nanau, Greek actress Angeliki Papoulia, Norwegian filmmaker and European Film Award winner Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel.
This year’s awards will also welcome an outstanding lineup of internationally renowned filmmakers, actors, and cultural voices. Among the other attending guests are Lebanese-German cinematographer Christopher Aoun, German-Iranian actress Banafshe Hourmazdi, French actress and Academy president Juliette Binoche, German actor Jerry Hofmann, Polish director Agnieszka Holland, German actresses Juliane Köhler and Caroline Peters, Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher, German director Volker Schlöndorff, German actress Maria Schrader, Palestinian director Elia Suleiman as well as German director Wim Wenders and many more.
