    Dovzhenko Film Studios (Kyiv, Ukraine)

Named after Oleksandr Dovzhenko, the Kyiv Film Studio was founded in 1927, making it one of the oldest and most prominent film studios in Ukraine. During its existence, it has created over 1,000 films, including masterpieces of world cinema that played a key role in the emergence of Ukrainian cinema as an independent art form.

The history of the Dovzhenko Film Studios begins with a state decision to establish a major film production centre in Kyiv.
On 12 February 1926, the Soviet authorities in Ukraine decided to create the Kyiv Film Factory — a powerful centre for film production. Construction began in the spring of 1927.

The studios included a huge pavilion, technical workshops, water pools for filming and specialised set constructions. One of the most striking aspects is the fact that construction took place during the day while filming was conducted at night.

The first film produced VAN’KA I MESNYK by Axel Lundin which was filmed in an unfinished pavilion and released on 4 March 1928.

The history of the studio is, above all, the history of directors and films that shaped Ukrainian cinema as an art form, among them Oleksandr Dovzhenko, Sergei Parajanov, Yuri Ilyenko, Leonid Bykov, Mykola Mashchenko and Ivan Mykolauchuk.
