A Sunday in the Country 2025 Poland

This special version of A SUNDAY IN THE COUNTRY for young film critics & journalists is something the European Film Academy and BNP Paribas New Horizons IFF have been presenting since 2012. In 2025, it again brought together eight participants in the Polish countryside for an extended weekend of screenings and discussions.
They spent the days watching films and discussing them, cinema and cinephilia in general, and life as a film journalist. In between there was cooking and eating together, and networking in a cottage by the Bystrzyckie lake.
After an introduction circle on Friday night, the screening programme started on Saturday morning with SLOW by Maria Kavtaradze and talking to the Lithuanian director about the reactions to her film, especially from the hearing-impaired and the asexual communities.
In the afternoon, YUNAN by Ameer Fakher Eldin was screened, which sees the protagonist ending up on a tiny patch of land in the North Sea (a “Hallig”) where Hanna Schygulla runs a small hotel. The director talked about a sense of belonging, filming in such a remote location, and a whale that came by lorry from the Netherlands.
After breakfast on Sunday, the group watched KONTINENTAL’25 by Radu Jude. The Romanian director shared his experiences with film criticism and how it formed his approach to film and filming.
The final film was GLORIOUS SUMMER, the feature debut of Helena Ganjalyan & Bartosz Szpak. The film portrays three women in a somewhat dystopian world where they live in a Renaissance palace with a remote voice in control.
The participants were two Polish winners of the Krzysztof Mętrak competition, Bogna Goślińska and Kacper Rydzewski, as well as Rafael Ariza Garrido (Spain), Călin Boto (Romania), Monika Gimbutaitė (Lithuania), Sevara Pan (Netherlands), Olga Ruin (Sweden) and Emel-Elizabeth Tuulik (Estonia). Expert for this edition was the European Bureau Chief for “The Hollywood Reporter”, Scott Roxborough (Canada).
The project was organised by the European Film Academy and New Horizons Association with the support of the Polish Film Institute, the local cultural institutes and the Krzysztof Mętrak competition for young film critics.
