    The European Film Awards 2026: European Film Academy announces “Academy Shortlist  

    Taking place on 17 January 2026 in Berlin, Germany, the 38th European Film Awards honour the greatest achievements in European cinema. The prestigious awards are annually presented jointly by the European Film Academy and European Film Academy Productions.  

    67 outstanding feature-length films have been shortlisted for a possible nomination for the European Film Awards, voted for by the members of the European Film Academy. The shortlist includes 44 feature films, 15 documentary films and 8 animated feature films with 27 shortlisted films directed or co-directed by women. With 34 European – both EU and non-EU – countries represented, the list of the selected films reflects the excellency of European filmmaking demonstrating the variety, diversity and creativity throughout Europe. 

    The shortlisted feature and documentary films have been chosen by members of the European Film Academy Board and invited European experts, the shortlisted animated feature films by a selection committee composed of members of the Academy Board and invited experts in co-operation with CARTOON, the European Association of Animation Film.

    The announcement of the Academy Shortlist is the first step in the awarding procedure. In the coming weeks, the 5,400 members of the European Film Academy will watch the shortlisted films, except for the categories European Young Audience Award, LUX Audience Award and the Honorary Awards, and vote for the nominations.  Nomination for the categories ‘European Film’, ‘European Director’, ‘European Discovery—Prix Fipresci’, ‘European Documentary’, ‘European Animated Feature Film’, ‘European Actress’, ‘European Actor’ and ‘European Screenwriter’, will be announced on 18 November 2025 at the iconic Real Alcázar of Sevilla, following the 22nd Seville European Film Festival. With this, the European Film Academy revives the tradition of announcing the majority of the nominations in front of an audience — an event that will now return to Seville every two years. 

    Further nomination announcements: 

    On 31 October 2025 the nominations for the ‘European Short Film – Prix Vimeo’, chosen by the European Film Academy Short Film Network, will be announced at the 70th SEMINCI – Valladolid International Film Festival. 

    On 26 November 2025 the nominations for the categories ‘European Casting Director’, ‘European Cinematographer’, ‘European Composer (Original Score)’, ‘European Costume Designer’, ‘European Editor’, ‘European Make-Up & Hair Artist’, ‘European Production Designer’, ‘European Sound Designer’, chosen by the Academy members from the shortlisted feature films, will be made public. 

    The ceremony of the European Film Awards – the most renowned and prestigious award for European cinema is presented by the European Film Academy and European Film Academy Production gGmbH in Berlin on 17 January 2026.
