English Actor Passes Away at the Age of 87

Born in London, Terence Stamp made his acting breakthrough in his debut feature film in 1962 with BILLY BUDD by Peter Ustinov. In an adaptation of the novel by Herman Melville, he played the protagonist, a kind-hearted sailor, for which he instantly received nominations for an Oscar and a BAFTA. For his performance as a psychopath who kidnaps a woman in THE COLLECTOR by William Wyler, he received the Best Actor Award in Cannes in 1965.
He was the mysterious visitor in TEOREMA by Pier Paolo Pasolini and Sergeant Troy in FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD by John Schlesinger.
Terence Stamp continued to work with renowned directors such as Joseph Losey, Ken Loach and Federico Fellini.
He played alongside Robert Redford, Debra Winger and Daryl Hannah in LEGAL EAGLES by Ivan Reitman (1986) as well as in WALL STREET (1987) with Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen. A surprise hit came in 1994 with THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT where he played a transsexual drag performer. Another highlight was his performance as an eccentric ex-prisoner in THE LIMEY by Steven Soderbergh (1999).
Terence Stamp has acted in more than 90 films. Of course, he will always be unforgettable as the villain General Zod in SUPERMAN.
Terence Stamp died on 17 August.
