Czech film actor, producer and executive passed away at the age of 78

Born in Děčín in then Czechoslavakia (now Czech Republic), the actor and producer Jiří Bartoška studied at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno and started acting at the experimental theatre Divadlo na provázku and different theatres in Ústí nad Labem and Prague.
As an actor in front of the camera, Bartoška appeared in over 170 film and television productions, most notably in SEKAL HAS TO DIE (1998), ALL MY LOVED ONES (1999), and TIGER THEORY (2016), as well as the television series SANITKA (1984) and NEVIDITELNÍ.
From 1994 on, Jiří Bartoška was president of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
He was also repeatedly nominated for the Czech Lion Awards, and he won this award in 2000 for ALL MY LOVED ONES by Matej Minac.
Throughout his life, he remained politically active and used his voice to fight for his beliefs. Jiří Bartoška died on 8 May 2025. He will be missed in Europe.
