    SWEDEN: Bio Skandia, Stockholm

Skandia Theatre is one of Stockholm’s most iconic cinemas, inaugurated in 1923 and designed by renowned architect Gunnar Asplund. With its neoclassical elegance, playful details and a starry ceiling that dims before each screening, it is a masterpiece of the Swedish Grace era. From the silent film days, when a grand Wurlitzer organ accompanied screenings, to today’s festivals and cultural events, Skandia has always been a vibrant meeting place for cinema lovers. Thanks to a successful campaign led by the Stockholm International Film Festival, the theatre was saved from closure in 2023 and continues to thrive as both an architectural gem and a living cultural venue.
