FINLAND: Kino Myyri, Vantaa
Kino Myyri in Vantaa, Finland, is a single-screen local arthouse cinema, which got a new lease of life four years ago.
A movie theatre operated in the same premises by the Myyrmäki train station, close to Helsinki, from the 1990s until the pandemic forced it to close its doors. In December 2021, Pop Up Kino Helsinki, specialised in outdoor screenings and other cinema events, took over the running of the theatre.
Kino Myyri’s new life as a home of great cinema and local film culture has been boosted by an active and enthusiastic audience. When the movie theatre was under a threat of closure, the residents of Myyrmäki fought back and managed to keep their cinema. The dynamic neighbourhood theatre has become an important communal meeting place where children, parents and seniors alike have had a chance to discover their love of film.
A programme with a focus on contemporary and arthouse films fills the screen up to seven days a week.
The active senior cinema, busy viewings for daycare and school kids, special screenings with guest speakers and films especially selected for people from a variety of linguistic backgrounds give Kino Myyri its unique character. For the past three years, Kino Myyri has organised the four-day Vantaa Urban Film Festival VUFF, which is the only larger film event in the city. Co-operation with the public, the City of Vantaa and other local actors creates a constantly evolving and imaginative foundation for new projects.
