Animated Feature Films

    In co-operation with CARTOON, the European Association of Animation Film, the award EUROPEAN ANIMATED FEATURE FILM 2021 is presented to the director of a European* animated feature film intended for theatrical release. Eligible candidates must be born in Europe or hold a European* passport.

    Animated feature films taken into consideration must have been produced or co-produced in at least one European* country and have a minimum length of 60 minutes. Eligible films must have had their first official screening (be it at a festival, at a regular cinema or online) between 1 July 2020 and 30 June 2021. The EFA Board has the right to refrain from this rule in exceptional cases.

    A film is considered an animated feature film with a minimum of 50 per cent of the film being animated. In case of doubt, a decision will be made by the EFA Board.

    Films have to be submitted by their rights-holders. Rights-holders agree to provide the films for the EFA VOD Platform. The version submitted has to be either the original language version with English subtitles or an English-language version of the film.

    A committee composed of experts appointed by CARTOON and the European Film Academy nominates four films.

    The four nominated films are announced four to eight weeks prior to the European Film Awards Ceremony and are made available on the EFA VOD Platform to the EFA Members who vote for the winner.

    The votes are kept by a notary or an auditor. The winner is announced during the European Film Awards Ceremony, streamed online at
