EFA Calls for Release of Mohammad Rasoulof

We join our colleagues at the film festivals in Cannes and Hamburg in utmost dismay: The European Film Academy wishes to express its deepest concern about the Iranian Revolutionary Court verdict, which sentenced the director Mohammad Rasoulof on July 23rd to one year in prison, also imposing a two-year ban on leaving the country and getting involved in any social or political activity.

Mohammad Rasoulof is a filmmaker, an artist. Through his work he keeps telling us about the reality of his country, thus facing the censorship imposed by the Iranian authorities, as also evidenced by his previous films GOODBYE, MANUSCRIPTS DON'T BURN and A MAN OF INTEGRITY. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps accused him of »endangering national security« and »propaganda against the Islamic government«. For this reason, he is now deprived of his freedom.

We ask for the immediate and unconditional release of Mohammad Rasoulof and call on festivals around the world, cinemas and all artists to do the same.
