Children Juries in Six European Cities will Elect Winner of EFA Young Audience Award

Nominated for the European Film Academy’s first Young Audience Award are BLUE BIRD by Gust Van den Berghe (Belgium), KAUWBOY by Boudewijn Koole (the Netherlands) and SISTER by Ursula Meier (France/Switzerland). A new section on www.europeanfilmawards.eu offers children and adults more information about the nominated films and the six cities participating in the EFA Young Audience Award.

The nominations were chosen by a committee consisting of Florence Dupont, artistic director, Sancy Film Festival for Young People (France), Jerzy Moszkowicz, director, International Young Audience Film Festival Ale Kino (Poland), and Maryanne Redpath, director, Generation section, Berlin International Film Festival (Germany). After they met at the Kristiansand International Children’s Film Festival in Norway, they issued the following statement:

It was a great challenge to participate in the nomination procedure for this first European Young Audience Award. Due to the great diversity – in form and content – of the submitted films, our discussions were intense. We not only discussed films of various genres and formats, we also considered the diversity of today’s young audiences. In the end we selected three high quality films which will challenge young audiences but haven’t necessarily been made exclusively for them. We wish to congratulate the nominated films and hope that the young audience juries in the six participating cities will enjoy watching these films.

This special initiative on the occasion of this year’s 25th European Film Awards will kick off this year with a network of the following six partners: EYE Film Institute Netherlands, Film Center Serbia, Danish Film Institute, Deutsche Kindermedienstiftung Goldener Spatz (Germany), Swedish Film Institute, and Museo Nazionale del Cinema (Italy).

On Young Audience Film Day on 10 June, the three nominated films will be screened to a young audience (10 – 13 year-olds) in Amsterdam, Belgrade, Copenhagen, Erfurt, Norrköping and Turin. And it is the young audience that will act as a jury and vote for the winner right after the screenings. The presentation of the award will take place on the same day in Erfurt.

The European Film Academy Young Audience Award is organised and presented by the European Film Academy and EFA Productions with the support of the Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM). The national Young Audience Film Day events will be organised with the support of the respective national partners. Official translation partner is English Express.

Here they met with seven young filmmakers from India: Amit Abhyankar, Kanchan Ghosh, Tushar Prakesh, Tathagata Singha, Siddharth Sinha, Shalini Usha Nair and Ujjwal Utkarsh. Realised in co-operation with the Goethe Institute (which in India is the Max Mueller Bhavan), the project brought the group to Morna, an idyllic place out in the countryside of Uttar Pradesh, where they watched and discussed each other’s films, cooked and ate Indian, European, and increasingly Indo-European food together, and explored the environment.

Joining the group were EFA Member Jakub Duszyński (distributor, Poland), Indian director / environmentalist Pradip Krishen who brought along his 1989 film IN WHICH ANNIE GIVES IT THOSE ONES, and Czech film critic Dominika Prejdová, creating an atmosphere of exchange between different generations of filmmakers from various cultural backgrounds.

A SUNDAY IN THE COUNTRY EXTENDED was realised in the framework of the celebratory year “India + Germany 2011 – 2012: Infinite Opportunities” and supported by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, the German Federal Foreign Office, the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and the label “Germany – Land of Ideas”.

From now on, parcel service provider GLS supports the European Film Academy and the European Film Awards as a sponsor. “Staying in touch with our more than 2,500 members is very important for us,” says Marion Döring, director of the European Film Academy, “and we are extremely glad that we have found such a competent and dedicated partner with GLS. Shipping screeners of 40 or more European films and voting papers to our members across the continent is a logistic masterpiece and with GLS, we have found the ideal partner.”

As the official parcel service provider for the European Film Awards, GLS will make sure that the screeners of the 40 or more European films in the EFA Selection, the list of films recommended for a nomination, will reach the EFA Membership. This way, all films in the selection have an equal chance and enable members of the European Film Academy to vote for the nominations and, ultimately, for the winners.

Klaus Conrad, Managing Director of GLS Germany GmbH & Co. OHG, says: “GLS stands for ‘Quality leader in European parcel logistics. This is something that everyone working for GLS strives to achieve every day.” GLS’ core business comprises standardised parcel services as well as express and logistics solutions. 642 depots and 38 central trans-shipment points realise area-wide services. 13,100 people and over 17,100 vehicles are on route for GLS and transport 363 million parcels annually for 220,000 customers throughout Europe.

The European Film Awards 2012 are presented by the European Film Academy e.V. and EFA Productions gGmbH with the support of the Maltese Ministry of Finance, Economy and Investment, the Malta Film Commission, FFA German Federal Film Board, the German State Lottery Berlin, the German State Minister for Culture and the Media, the MEDIA Programme of the EU, and Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.
