When actors, directors and producers, nominees and winners, presenters, Members of the European Film Academy and guests arrive in ŠKODA cars at the red carpet for the 24th European Film Awards, the Tempodrom’s tented roof will shine in red above the centre of Berlin.
While guests check in, enjoy a drink and watch the arrivals on screens along the balconies, more than 25 TV crews and over 30 accredited photographers in black tie attire from across Europe will turn the red carpet into a frenzy of European media attention.

Inside the big arena, under a gigantic chandelier, Shantel, one of Europe’s most spectacular live performers, will accompany the ceremony musically. Following a script by Maria von Heland (with additional input from Karsten Dusse and Markus Zimmer), an impressive line-up of European stars will announce a total of the 17 award recipients. On a set designed by Jürgen Schmidt-André, German star comedienne Anke Engelke will once again host this year’s European Film Awards which were again produced by EFA Director Marion Döring and Jürgen Biesinger (executive producer). More than 150 accredited journalists follow the ceremony from the press centre in the small arena, filing their reports and sending off their pictures. The ceremony will be streamed live on the internet at www.europeanfilmawards.eu and broadcast in over 100 territories world-wide.

At the end of the ceremony, after all winners and presenters have gathered on stage for a final picture, the guests will file to be shuttled to the five-star superior Hôtel Concorde, „official hotel of the 24th European Film Awards”, where the after-show party takes place. On two floors, the hotel will become an exclusive party location with different buffets and live cooking stations. One of the first attractions will be EFA partner TNT’s display where winners can leave their statuettes well-presented and security-guarded. After some meet and greet DJs Fatih Akin and Adam Bousdoukos will get the dance-floor moving and special musical guests from Georgia, Asea Sool, the combination of Atina Kornelius’ profound, velvety voice and Bek Bekson’s masterly guitar, will perform in the lobby.

In recognition of a unique contribution to the world of film the European Film Academy takes great pleasure in presenting Mads Mikkelsen with the honorary award EUROPEAN ACHIEVEMENT IN WORLD CINEMA 2011.

Picture: Kenneth Willardt

Ever since his debut in Nicolas Winding Refn’s crime films PUSHER (1996) and PUSHER II – for which he received the Danish critics’ award Bodil – Mads Mikkelsen has played characters we fear and find attractive, often at the same time: As a butcher in THE GREEN BUTCHERS (2003) and as the priest in ADAM’S APPLES (2005) – both by Anders Thomas Jensen. He played the doctor in OPEN HEARTS (2002) and the manager of an Indian orphanage in AFTER THE WEDDING (2006) – both by Susanne Bier. For the latter he was nominated for the European Film Awards and for the Danish Robert.
He shot to international fame as the villain “Le Chiffre” in JAMES BOND 007 – CASINO ROYALE (2006). In 2008 he received another nomination for the European Film Awards, for FLAME & CITRON by Ole Christian Madsen. He’s starred in COCO CHANEL & IGOR STRAVINSKY (2009) by Dutch-born Jan Kounen, in the Spanish-Danish co-production TORREMOLINOS 73 (2003) and in the German production THE DOOR (2009) by Anno Saul.

From the set of the Franco-German co-production MICHAEL KOHLHAAS Mikkelsen sent the following statement: “There is very little to say when you are honoured with an award of this calibre other than that I am deeply grateful. Seeing the list of former recipients, all giants, and realising that people outside my family keep an eye on my work, makes me accept this award with great humbleness and a big smile.”

Mads Mikkelsen will be an honorary guest at the 24th European Film Awards Ceremony on 3 December 2011 in Berlin.

Stephen Frears, director of films like DANGEROUS LIAISONS, THE HI-LO COUNTRY and THE QUEEN will receive this year’s EUROPEAN FILM ACADEMY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD for his outstanding and dedicated body of work.

Stephen Frears (c) Sophie Baker

“I don’t know what to say,” Frears said over the telephone. Having already received various awards like the Spanish Goya, the French César and the British BAFTA, he said, “well, they’re always nice – if you get them,” and added: “But I’m very grateful, it’s very nice to be complimented by Europe.”

The director remembered his long relationship with the European Film Academy: “I was there when it was founded, I came flying back from the Oscars to get there.” He stated, “of course, I’m never quite sure whether England is part of Europe. We’re divided about this and have complicated feelings,” adding: “But what matters is to keep European film going! And I’m totally committed to that. Nothing else matters. If the films are good, then people will go and see them.”

Stephen Frears will be an honorary guest at the 24th European Film Awards Ceremony on 3 December 2011 in Berlin.

Stephen Frears
Having begun his career in British television, Stephen Frears made his breakthrough in 1985 with MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDERETTE. Earning him nominations for the Oscar and BAFTA, the film was based on a screenplay by Hanif Kureish with whom he collaborated again in 1987 for SAMMY AND ROSIE GET LAID. Stephen Frears then made the Joe Orton biopic PRICK UP YOUR EARS (1987) and DANGEROUS LIAISONS (1988) – which won three Oscars, two BAFTAs and a French César for the director. Among his other films are THE GRIFTERS (1990), MARY REILLY (1996), THE HI-LO COUNTRY (1998), HIGH FIDELITY (2000), DIRTY PRETTY THINGS (2003), MRS HENDERSON PRESENTS (2005), and TAMARA DREWE (2010). His film THE QUEEN (2006) was a major international success, it was nominated for virtually every award there is and won the Spanish Goya as well as an Oscar, Golden Globe and European Film Award for Helen Mirren.
